The Art Vacancy exhibition Conceal/Reveal brought together ten multidisciplinary artists in an 8,000 square foot raw industrial space. TAV co-founder Sáng Huynh, in partnership with Urban Scale, curated the exhibition, selecting both U.S. based and international artists whose work challenges societal norms in some way. The immersive environment, coupled with the notion of celebrating the unconventional, served as a catalyst for questioning the status quo and advocating for change.
Studio Loutsis designed the identity for the exhibition, leveraging the literal meanings of the title words. In digital applications, we animated “conceal” and “reveal” so that each word was repeated on the faces of a cuboid shape. These shapes rotated and overlapped, covering and uncovering each other as they turned. In print, the wordmark appeared as a still from the animation, creating a strong sense of dynamism in a static medium. In the exhibition installation and the accompanying publication, we continued this interpretation of the text; our designs referenced the theme of reimagining norms with elements of text and graphic design that obscured, interrupted, or otherwise subverted traditional rules of design.
