Future Projects is a New York based interior design and architecture firm co-founded by Julie Tran and Khoi Nguyen. Across a wide variety of residential, cultural, commercial, and institutional projects, Tran and Nguyen’s award-winning firm is built not upon a particular style, but rather on a rigorous process that aims to create aesthetic environments where people can connect with each other in new ways.
Studio Loutsis mined Future Projects’ name in developing the firm’s design strategy. In dialogue with Tran and Nguyen, we identified the concept of uncertainty, which often has a negative connotation; however, given that one of Future Projects’ core values is optimism, uncertainty can also be seen as existing on a continuum toward positive attributes like hope, excitement, and anticipation. In both print and digital design, the idea of uncertainty manifests itself through blurring. The design strategically uses crisp, sharp text and images to punch through the otherwise blurred environment. On the Future Project website, for example, Studio Loutsis designed the interface so that words and pictures come into focus as the user scrolls over them.
