The Art Vacancy (TAV) is a woman-founded art organization that supports artists across all disciplines. The founders—artists themselves—saw the significant challenges their peers faced in finding venues to show their work: opportunities were either controlled by gatekeepers at elite institutions, or they were superficial engagements with no real investment or support. TAV believed in the possibility of creating opportunities at the intersection of access and excellence. In addition to producing exhibitions in vacant spaces across New York City, TAV supports artists through mentorships, resources, and community events.
Studio Loutsis created the brand identity for The Art Vacancy based around three key attributes: as an organization, TAV is thought-provoking, resourceful, and community- focused. Our approach to the branding incorporated a single family of typefaces that dynamically shifts across a series of gradients. The typeface, Akzidenz-Grotesk, is a modern classic sans serif. It is easy to read in both print and digital, yet bold and authoritative—a perfect representation of TAV’s commitment to openness and to the highest level of artistic practice.
